Independent Musicians should get paid

Editor Notes

I was prepared to start the year off on a rant about independent musicians being true entrepreneurs and making money from what they do. After all, it costs you money to buy your instruments, to professionally record your songs, and distribute your music. Not to mention all the time that you have to spend promoting and marketing. Yes, the cost of production and distribution has come down, you can market yourself for free via social networks, and word of mouth is worth more than paid advertising. But what about the time spent? Time is the most precious currency for the independent artist right now and you should seek a return on investment for your time.

I came across a very interesting and informative article that fit well into the theme of where I am going with this. It's from SocialMusicMedia.com and it's entitled, "Why shouldn't I give my music away for free?", written by Ann Marie Landry.

Independent Music and MediaGreat article! Ann, you have hit some excellent points about not giving away the music, all the time. We are living in a time where people are being taught to place zero value on other people's hard work. Sure, we are being taught to value our internet connection, our cell phone (smart phone), and the big 4 media giants (Google, Apple, Amazon, and Facebook). But in return we are disrespecting the human factor of creating any form of content. It has started with music and trickling down to cinema and literature.

I have always been a fan of give your potential fans a little for free and if they like it, then they will buy, eventually. No need to try and push a free download or CD down my throat. Consumers buy into what resonates with them and what provides value in their lives. If your music is great, it resonates with someone, but you give it all away, then the value they will place on it will be, FREE.
